This is a series of four handbooks for community workers, Vol 1-3, 1995 and Vol 4, 1999. The first three volumes of this series (sold as a set) are designed to assist fieldworkers in encouraging the development of self-reliant, creative communities by integrating the approach of Paulo Freire's and Manfred MaxNeef's understanding of fundamental human needs, with the three essential tools needed to transform communities: group methods, organisational development, and social analysis. Volume 1 is a practical handbook describing Paulo Freire's theory of developing critical awareness and how to put this theory into practice. Volume 2 focuses on the skills necessary for participatory education. Volume 3 is a practical manual on the social information and analysis necessary to develop critical awareness and long-term planning. Volume 4 is a practical and accessible workbook for community development workers which focuses on the environment, gender, racism, multi-cultural understanding and building participatory governance. The book is divided into easy-to-follow modules which can be covered in any order.
