This book, describes the Psycho-Social Support Programme of Kitgum District in northern Uganda and, through numerous case studies, paints a vivid picture of everyday reality in a conflict zone, the challenges people face and how they address them. In the past decade over 2 million children have been killed in armed conflict worldwide, three times that number seriously injured or permanently disabled, and millions more forced to witness - or even carry out - horrendous acts of violence. Involvement in such conflict weakens the family and community support systems which normally underpin social and psychological development of the children in the community. Historically agencies have focused mainly on the physical vulnerability and material needs of children involved in such situations. In documenting the Programme's origins, aims, organisation, achievements, weaknesses and lessons, the focus is on how psycho-social support can help ALL communities affected by armed conflict, to reconstruct the social web which gives them their unique identity and reinforces their resilience.
