This is a handbook for implementing health programmes in deprived environments, particularly in camps of displaced persons. Sanitation is at the origin of a number of diseases linked to the lack of hygiene, quality and quantity of water, waste, and insect and rodent vectors, diseases which are always responsible for a deterioration in the physical condition of individuals. This sanitation guide emphasises the "three As" for all sanitation installation: Socially Acceptable (a good knowledge of the population concerned is important), Appropriate (technically well-adapted), and Affordable. This handbook also includes data sheets that may be adapted to local customs, and to logistical and financial means available in the field.
