Written for non-specialist doctors and medical students working in district hospitals of the developing world who can not refer a patient, both in an emergency and for cold surgery. The book contains the collective views of an international group of experts, and selects information from the specialities into which surgery has now fallen, which the generalist can make good use of. Users of the book report doing successful operations on surgical problems they knew nothing about and found they could cope with problems, such as when a doctor who had just arrived at a hospital had to treat a patient with a strangulated hernia. He was the only doctor present and knew that if he referred the patient he would die on the way. So he used the book and the result was successful.
