Looks at ways to protect traditional water sources with the aim of maximising the use of local skills and avoiding the use of expensive equipment. Cement is the greatest expense and the book how to keep the use of it as low as possible. Source improvement is most relevant to small communities and rural populations, but can also provide benefits on the edge of urban developments if there is no contamination of the aquifer from latrines or other point sources of poll. The book has an accompanying facilitators manual on ‘Encouraging Change’ which provides practical information on building the capacity of communities to identify and analyse their own problems and to select options that are most appropriate to their needs and resources.
